Deadly Bx. crash bus hit 78 mph

Moments before the tragic bus crash that killed 15 people in The Bronx last month, driver Ophadell Williams had the bus hauling at its maximum speed of 78 mph, investigators said yesterday. The bus hit that mark 45 seconds before the crash, the National Transportation Safety Board said, but the speed at the time of the crash was not revealed. Probers only have the bus' speed data from the 90 seconds immediately preceding the crash because that's all the bus' data-collection system is designed to preserve, said spokesman Peter Knudson. The speed limit on the stretch of highway where the bus crashed is 50 mph.
