Howell recovering well, excelling in rehab

Howell (left-shoulder surgery) worked a 1-2-3 first inning in his rehab start for Single-A Charlotte on Thursday, striking out one and throwing just nine pitches (then 16 more in the bullpen). He's set to make the fourth of his 10 scheduled rehab appearances on Sunday, starting a noon game at Port Charlotte. "It's been going great," Howell said. "Recovery's been good. It's never a problem pitching, it's the next day you worry about. And I feel great today. That's the No. 1 thing, that I can go every other day, or back-to-back." Once Howell reports to Durham he'll be used like a regular reliever and will be subject to warming up with the possibility of sitting back down, the same as when he returns to the Rays' bullpen.
