Miami-Dade schools, inspector general’s office rethink their relationship

What do you do if you’re an elected official and you get a slap on the wrist from the inspector general?In Miami-Dade, you go after the inspector general.This month, Miami-Dade Inspector General Chris Mazzella said School Board member Renier Diaz de la Portilla violated School Board rules and procurement procedures when he sent a mailer to Republican voters in 2009. Diaz de la Portilla responded by calling the inspector general’s office “a wasteful, taxpayer-funded kangaroo court that answers only to the whims of its leader, Mr. Chris Mazzella.”Diaz de la Portilla is now questioning whether the school district should continue its relationship with the county watchdog.The issue is likely to come up at Wednesday’s School Board meeting.The county inspecto...
