Wide receiver Julian Edelman isn't expected to play Sunday because of a lingering knee injury, and the news could get worse for the struggling New England Patriots.
The Athletic reported Thursday that Edelman likely will miss an unspecified number of games because of the injury, which could require surgery. He probably will return this season, The Athletic said.
He was listed on Wednesday's practice report as limited, and he reportedly didn't practice on Thursday.
The Patriots (2-4) are coming off a 33-6 loss to the San Francisco 49ers last weekend, and they travel to Buffalo to meet the AFC East-leading Bills (5-2) on Sunday.
New England could be without both Edelman and starting wide receiver N'Keal Harry, who suffered a concussion against the 49ers.
Damiere Byrd, Gunner Olszewski and Jakobi Meyers are the remaining receivers on the active roster as of Thursday's practice.
Edelman, 34, has 21 catches for 315 yards but no touchdown catches on the season. He had eight receptions for 179 yards in a Week 2 loss to Seattle, and since then, has caught just eight balls.
In his 11th season with the Patriots, Edelman has 620 career receptions for 6,822 yards and 36 touchdowns. He's been part of three Super Bowl-winning teams and was the game MVP in 2018.
